Morris & Companys Shop
Situated at 449 Oxford Street, London. Photographed c1911.
The Morris firms shop and showroom at first occupied the same premises in Red Lion Square and then Queen Square, Bloomsbury, as its workshops. In 1877, however, an elegant shop was opened at 264 (re-numbered 449 in February 1882) Oxford Street, in Londons fashionable West End. Here, customers could see not only a wide range of Morris & Cos products but also ceramics by William De Morgan, metalwork by W. A. S. Benson and John Pearson and glass by James Powell & Sons. The photograph shows displays, in the ground-floor window, of Morris & Co. chintzes, embroidery and furniture along with De Morgan pots and, on the upper floor, panels of Morris & Co. stained glass.
